Picking the right hero and using their abilities at the right time can definitely turn the tide of battle and also help you survive what would otherwise be a winless skirmish. This includes temporarily beefing up the defense of a building or speeding up your troops. These characters act like generals who can turn the tide of battle thanks to their special abilities. One added wrinkle with Mushroom Wars 2 is the addition of heroes. Most of the time, your decisions boil down to stuff like when to upgrade, where to position troops, and when to attack to interrupt your opponent’s momentum without putting yourself in a bad spot. You also want to have enough forges and towers to take advantage of their perks but not too much that you kill your ability to produce enough soldiers. While upgrades improve a building’s capabilities, for example, it also requires tying up a certain number of troops, which makes you vulnerable for a period of time. Then you have forges, which can raise your attack and defense parameters each time you upgrade them.īalancing what kind of buildings to make and when to upgrade them lies at the crux of the gameplay. Castle towers, meanwhile, can’t be used to recruit soldiers but can fire cannonballs at approaching troops within a set radius around it. Villages, for example, let you recruit troops - the maximum number of which can go up when you upgrade it. Matches basically revolve around building one of three facility types, each with a synergistic role to play. What it does well, however, is boil down its gameplay to the very essence of the RTS genre and make a game that’s accessible to newcomers while still providing fun to veterans of the franchise looking for some quick fun to kill time. It does not boast anywhere near the diversity in troops, facilities and mechanics of a Starcraft, for example. The concept of the game itself is rather simple by real-time strategy or RTS standards. By the time I finally unlocked the ability to choose heroes to lead my army, I felt a bit worn down. The tutorial portion of the game, for example, adds a lot of filler battles in between that bogs down the process a bit. It’s admittedly a slow start that could be streamlined a bit better. I definitely recommend that folks go through the campaign first, which does a good job in teaching you the basics. It’s arguably the best way to experience the game. It’s like having the best of both worlds because you get the portability of mobile plus the ability to easily hook it up to the TV like a console should you so wish. In my case, I decided to experience the franchise for the first time by playing Mushroom Wars 2 on the Nintendo Switch. Initially released on iOS devices in late 2016, Mushroom Wars 2 is the follow-up to the first Mushroom Wars, which, interestingly enough, made its debut on PlayStation 3 before being ported to mobile. Although it’s a solid, chunky campaign, though, it does end up exposing some of the game’s shortcomings. As someone who loves games with campaigns, I was especially looking forward to going through Mushroom Wars 2’s story, which boasts four episodes with 50 missions each. Then again, competitive multiplayer is only one slice of this portobello as Mushroom Wars 2 also has a dedicated campaign that spans several missions. Versus play against other humans is Mushroom Wars 2 at its best, especially when those humans are right next to you and you can see their expressions and reactions. “That is soooo cheap!” she said, laughing at the sight of a bazillion mushroom troops leaving my buildings, only to converge on a single solitary fortification of hers.ĭespite her loss, my niece was clearly having fun. That’s like blocking an opponent’s shot in basketball and converting a four-point play at the other end.īy the time she realized what I was doing, it was too late. I especially targeted buildings that produced troops, which had the added effect of taking away my niece’s ability to recruit more fighters while allowing me to grow my own forces. I would then split up and disperse my forces to other buildings, which would cause her to send part of her sizable force to attack my “smaller” outposts, only for me to retreat then have all my forces converge on one of her less defended outposts. All of a sudden, I had a beachhead in the middle of the map. That’s when I got a cheesy yet brilliant idea of waiting for the battle to finish before sending my troops - ALL of them - to attack her weakened forces in said tower to take it from her. Should I dismantle one of the towers? Should I go for broke and try to steal one of her buildings? Fortunately, my niece was new to the game as well and made the mistake of attacking a neutral tower first. As I saw my niece slowly but surely double her troop counts against mine, I felt a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. ![]() ![]() "When you need some shelter from the rain, when you need a healer for your pain, I will be there time and time again."– Leona Lewis, "Here I Am" No other name falling off my lips."– Lady Gaga, "I'll Never Love Again" "I'd never lived before your love, I'd never felt before your touch, and I never needed anyone to make me feel alive, but then again, I wasn't really living."– Kelly Clarkson, "Before Your Love" "Let's love like there's no goodbyes."– Dua Lipa, "No Goodbyes" I'll be the greatest fan of your life."– Edwin McCain, "I'll Be" "Two hearts and one home."– Harry Styles, "Sweet Creature" Love your curves and all your edges, all your perfect imperfections."– John Legend, "All of Me" "When you say you love me, know I love you more."– Miley Cyrus, "Adore You" Something in the way she woos me." – The Beatles, "Something" "Something in the way she moves attracts me like no other lover. For crowd control, Devinder “Dev” Crousley can pull out a staff that emits ultraviolet light to turn vampires into ash and send out a transporter beacon to instantly teleport for a quick escape. On the more stealth side is Jacob Boyer, who is equipped with cloaking abilities and a raven for scoping out enemies’ positions. Really cool powers that blend well with gunplayĮach of the four selectable characters is filled with booming personalities, which play into their individual approach to gameplay. For those interested in some open-world vampire-hunting action, here are our thoughts after playing for around 15 to 20 hours. Redfall is out now on Xbox Series X, Series S and PC, and we finished a playthrough after being provided a Steam review code. Then there are the various performance issues and game-breaking bugs currently plaguing the title at launch. This makes firefights fairly boring after the first several hours in single-player. It would feel even better if the enemy artificial intelligence wasn’t so primitive. When combat does commence against vampires and their gun-toting followers, the gunplay mixed with the psychic powers feel great. It’s too bad, because the in-game notes, books and art style really do a great job in world-building. ![]() Despite two fairly unique open-world maps, they’re fairly lifeless, which makes early exploration a chore before fast-travel points come into play. The problem is that Redfall doesn’t meet Arkane’s own standards nor excel the way its many inspirations do. Then there are other influences from more tactical shooters like Gears of War and Far Cry. It also takes huge inspiration from many multiplayer-leaning shooters, including Borderlands and Destiny, in how it’s constantly rewarding characters with loot and experience for destroying enemies or completing objectives. Redfall finds itself tapping into Arkane’s rich history of giving players creative ways to tackle enemies via both weapons and special powers.
